╥Every music technology student knows that brass sounds are the most difficult thing you can ask a synthesiser to mimick. If realistic-sounding brass is your goal, and you want to go beyond simple stabs, then the best bet is to sample from ╘real╙ sources, like records and CD╒s. Of the latter, there have been a few attempts at producing the ultimate brass sample CD, but none with the unique appeal of Phantom Horns.
╥The CD is the brainchild of two session men who╒ve worked together as a horn section on dozens of records: trumpeter John Thirkell and sax-man Gary Barnacle. Rather than set out to produce an all-dancing brass CD, they╒ve opted to specialise in the work of yer typical brass section in pop, rock, and dance.
╥The samples are divided along stylistic lines, with suitable homage being paid to three of the popular music╒s greatest brass sections, the James Brown horns, Earth Wind & Fire, and Tower of Power. Of these, the JB- inspired riffs are juicy-sweet and funky, while the EWF styles are suitably spectacular.
╥Rock ╘n╒ roll and reggae sections swiftly follow, but the most intriguing part of Phantom Horns comes near the end; some 30-odd tracks worth of solo sax and trumpet samples, which can sound a bit daft in isolation, but which act as building-blocks for the user to assemble custom riffs and solos. Long notes, short notes, swells and falls -- they╒re all here waiting to be chopped up and hurled into the mincer.
╥Like the longer blasts that precede them these solo snippets are all offered in a choice of pitches no more than a fourth apart, so no matter what kind of track you╒re trying to fit them into, you shouldn╒t have to do any radical detuning. The longer riffs also come in a choice of BPMs, so ╘artificial╒ stretching should be averted in most sessions.
╥Instrument -wise, there are alto-tenor, and baritone saxes for Mr Barnacle, and trumpet, flugelhorn, and trombone from Mr Thirkell. Flugelhorn is one of the great under-used brass voicings; it╒s nice to see it here.
╥Recording-wise, everything is very clean. Overall, Phantom Horns is a clever and well executed package that should cure a lot of headaches in a lot of studios. To misquote a well-known advert, it does exactly what it says on the sleeve╙. (- Dan Goldstein, Editor, THE MIX, May 1995).

- Another great rhythm guitar sample collection from TIME+SPACE. Have you ever wanted a funky guitar loop but been restricted by drums, bass etc.? I╒m going to buy one, case open and shut... There╒s a very up-to-the-minute set of rhythmic backdrops... Conclusion: Following on from the successful Ambient sampling CD, Vol. 2 is less consistent but more varied. Harder and colder than its predecessor, it would make a good complementary volume. If you can only afford one ambient library, this CD certainly covers far more bases, from lush digital textures to BBC radiophonic workshop. Engineering is excellent, as you would expect from Mr Boddy... two or three well chosen backdrops would be enough to lay behind a trancey dance tune. For those working in post pro, the quality of this library will not disappoint, and the logical grouping of sounds and sleeve descriptions should make finding just the right tone that bit easier. ╥The Zero-G Datafiles started quite a trend when they were first released. The ease with which a huge library of sounds could be created was a revelation. Since then, every one and his pet hamster has climbed aboard the wagon, and its now at bursting point. Avoiding the squash Time & Space have seized upon the popular medium of CD ROM, to re-release their first pioneering CDs in PC format. Each CD-ROM is arranged into 100 folders, and each WAV format sample has a unique number that tallies with the sleeve listings.
╥The first Datafile opens with a number of drum loops. Then follows a giant-sized selection of single hit percussion samples; complete TR808 and 909 kits are featured, as well as 76 other snares and 44 bass drums. Indeed rifling through this volume of noises might drive you insane, but the effort is worth it. Amongst the copious amounts of vocal snippets, ad libs and effects ad libs and effects (some of which have been on more tracks than an Intercity), are some absolutely wonderful sounds like the rumbling sub-basses guaranteed to cause your speakers some distress, and some much needed cheesy flutes.
╥Datafile 2 starts in much the same way, but has more loops (some ten folders╒ worth) than the first. There are guest appearances from the Roland R8, and the instantly recognisable but equally lovable Alesis HR168 in the miscellaneous percussion section, plus a huge helping of off-the-wall sci-fi sound effects.
╥The best sounds on this CD-ROM appear in the form of some Juno 6 basses, both of the resonant attack pop-type, and the rolling sub brass variety. Also the multisampled ╘Italo House╒ piano, and the blurping SH-101 will undoubtably bring a smile to those with aspirations of club fame. In ╘folder 73╒ resides a motley crew of guitar twangs, grating chords and rhythmical riffs. The CD-ROM closes with some interesting (and some rather silly) atmospheric effects and pads; the best being the searing Moodsynth One.
╥The third CD-ROM in the series is much the same only different. This time there are over twenty folders╒ worth of drum loops, including breaks and intros, and some live percussion. The strength of the whole drum bit is largely down to some excellent Roland CR78 sounds; the predecessor to the omnipotent TR-series. it╒s much fresher and brilliantly blippy.
╥After another mass of vocal samples, arrives the ZERO-G equivalent of a BBC sound effects CD, with everything from elephant wails to UFO swishes. A strings section adds to the myriad options, and contains some enigmatic ensemble sounds, as well as samples from the U-110 and the Kurzweil. Also noteworthy are the various squidges from the TB303; and samples are always less expensive and less hassle than owing one.
╥Putting samples on an ISO-9660 format CD-ROM as opposed to a sampler specific format, is possibly the most sensible idea since the green cross code. Not only PCs can read them but Atari and Amiga computers too. Samples can be used in any application, from the ╘tracker╒-type, to MIDI and sample sequencers (like Breakthru), There╒s also the possibility of dumping the samples via MIDI to a compatible sampler or synthesiser. The best thing about it is that it makes it a whole lot easier to get creative, and that╒s what ╘s fundamentally important. Each volume costs ú19.95, including postage and packaging╙.

Glossary: Dhol - A large drum played with a pair of sticks. It is loud and lacks subtlety. Originally used mainly in tribal and rural areas at weddings and similar happy events. Dholak - A drum made from hollowed wood, fat waisted and tapering towards the ends. The two drum heads are of skin stretched over hoops. Played with the fingers. Ghara - is a porous earthenware pot. It is played with the fingers, usually with metal rings on them. Tabla - Consists of two drums. The tabla is the right hand drum and the banya or dugga is the left. Both drum heads are of skin, but the body of the dugga, the bass drum, is metal, and that of the tabla is wood. Chimpta - Long metal tongs with tambourine-like discs along both arms. A ring attached to the closed end plays complementary rhythms. Tumbi or ektara - Simple one-stringed instrument. Taliaan - Finger cymbals. The NAME and ADDRESS of the credit card holder, the DELIVERY ADDRESS if different, the credit card NUMBER and EXPIRY DATE, a DAYTIME TELEPHONE NUMBER so we can reach you if there is any problem processing your order. If you call outside of normal office hours (after approx. 17.30 or before approx. 09.00), you may leave your order on our answering machines, but remember to speak clearly and slowly, spelling words where necessary.

Make your cheque or postal order(s) payable to "TIME & SPACE". Give your NAME, ADDRESS, TELEPHONE or FAX NUMBER, and the ITEM NAMES of the goods you require. For fastest delivery, pay by postal orders, credit card, or cash (to pay by cash, ask the post office for a registered envelope (guaranteed delivery) - this method is very safe. We cannot accept responsibility for cash sent by any other method). If paying by personal cheque, please allow time for us to clear the cheque through the bank - sorry but this is approx 7 working days! - so avoiding sending cheques if you are in a hurry.

If ordering from outside of the United Kingdom, please add ú5.00 to the inclusive UK price to cover airmail post and handling, or add ú10.00 if you would like us to send your order by Express airmail (normally 2-4 days). Please pay by international cheque only (Bank cheque, Eurocheque, or Post office Girocheque), in pounds sterling (GBP).
OUR RETURNS POLICY
We will replace any defective product immediately at our cost. However we can not accept returns for any other reason. If you are in any doubt as to the suitability of the product you are ordering, please visit one of our jukebox locations and listen to the products in full BEFORE you order. If you have a defective product please call customer support (01442-870681) for a return merchandise authorisation number (RMA). Packages without an RMA will not be accepted.
